Week 10

This week started off with a bang since we are getting over sickness and Dirk was gone for most of the weekend.  Also, all the other kids are on fall break so we've had a lot visitors ;).

Language Arts -
ELI started reading "The Little Prince" on his own this week!  I was so glad to see him take the initiative and decide to start reading this without any push from me.  He usually only will listen to audiobooks.  He also worked on some sentence structuring (coordinating conjunctions), dictation and his handwriting.  He's doing cursive this year and it's not really his thing ha!  He does better when I sit by him.  When he was doing his dictation I really had him focus on writing his letters on the line and wow, he did so much better!  I'm going to make a point to do that more.   IVY continued her All About Reading and got through lesson 20.  She is picking up things very quickly!  She did her handwriting this week too and it looks good.  I really want to focus on her writing more though and especially the words she's learn in her reading program.  We don't always do that and it helps her SO much that I've got to make it a priority this next week.  I'm so happy to see that she's nearly halfway through her all about reading though!!!  EMMITT had fun this doing school with his buddy Bronson.  We missed Tuesday since it was their last swim class so he only did it on Thursday.  He's getting his vowels down and their sounds.

Math -
ELI worked on adding large money equations this week.  Ivy worked on some addition problems and writing 75-100.  Emmitt continued practicing counting 1-15.

History -
This week learned more about Beethoven and Itzhak Perlman.  Mr. Perlman was a musician that was crippled at age 4 due to polio but went on to become a great violinist despite his physical limitations. We discussed him and Beethoven and how they were still able to do great things even with physical disabilities.

Also this week at our commonwealth, I taught a class on great battles.  Eli, Ivy and Emmitt (Erik was there too with his Magnatiles lol) were all in my class.   We read a story on the Battles at Lexington and Concord and then we read a story on the Battle of Gettysburg along with the Gettysburg Address.  WE built swords, which was a huge hit with all the kids!!  We had 11 kids in our class and thankfully Dirk was there to help with my class since Lisa wasn't able to be there.  I had the kids do Tableu's - I have them put themselves in a point in the battle and then I'd count down and they basically had to strike a pose that reflected how they think they would've felt.  I actually think they enjoyed that quite a bit (I sure did ;).

Gym -
Gym was great this week!!  All the kids participated and Eli and Ivy both worked on their back handsprings, aerials (starting with using only one hand).  Emmitt worked on climbing everywhere and doing tricks on the trampoline.  Good times!!

Ivy and Emmitt also finished their swim lessons and they both did AWESOME!!  They can both now swim in the deep end without help although Ivy is a lot stronger of swimmer then Emmitt.  I still need to be near him and we don't go in the very deep end.  I'm so happy and proud of them!!  Yay!!  We plan to hit up the pool at least once a week for awhile to help them get stronger and practice what they've learned.  Erik also got in the pool with us this week and loved it!  I'm happy about that since he never wanted to get in before.

Tech -
We worked more on Eli's planetarium and everyone got to look at it and play with it.  It sure is fun to get these Tinker Crate's!  We also watched more planet videos (the fun kid ones) on YouTube!
